SEZAD organises a clean-up campaign at the Fishing Port in Duqm

Duqm – 27 July, 2022

The Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD), represented by the Environmental Awareness Team, in cooperation with Renaissance Services Company, Sager Environmental Solutions and Marsa Duqm Investment Company, organised a clean-up campaign at the multi-purpose Fishing Port in Duqm. The campaign, streamlined with “Together for a sustainable environment in Duqm” overall campaign, is aimed at cleaning the Port from the different types of garbage, including plastic wastes.

The campaign attracted over 40 volunteers of SEZAD staff and others from companies operating in the Zone. Other participants were members of the marine crew from fishing vessels and boats, which are anchored at the Fishing Port. The clean-up campaign targeted cleaning an area covering around 4.5 square kilometres in the Port. In addition to having the volunteers on ground, a specialised truck was used in the cleaning process.

Marwa bint Hamdoon Al Hashimi, Environmental Inspector and Head of the Environmental Awareness Team from the Environmental Regulatory Department at SEZAD, pointed out, “The campaign focused on collecting the piles of plastic wastes that are stuck in the Port’s basin, which were caused by sea waves and some irresponsible fishing activities. Preserving the environment stands on top of SEZAD’s priorities and this campaign comes within the agenda of the Environmental Regulatory Department in the Zone, which brings various activities including environment events on land or at sea. Additionally, organising the clean-up campaigns and awareness programmes will continue throughout the year with the support of community members and companies operating in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm”.
